Luxor Temple
Near Karnak and dedicated to Amun is the huge Luxor Temple, dating from the 1300s BC. It is full of monumental statues, tall walls and ancient carvings, and is beautifully lit at night.

The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. For 3,400 years they have sat in the Theban necropolis, across the River Nile.

Hatchepsout temple
The temple of Queen Hatshepsut, in the Valley of the Queens is extremely impressive. You climb the stairs to the outside with all the pillars, statues and colourful inscriptions and paintings. It is amazing how the colours are still so vibrant.
Medinet Habu
Medinet Habu is the Mortuary Temple of Ramses III, a huge complex second only to Karnak in size and better preserved. Medinet Habu is among the least visited of the major sights at Luxor, but it deserves more attention than it gets.
Ramesseum
Ramses II built the Temple of the Ramesseum as a funerary Temple in 1304-1207 BC. It was dedicated to the God Ra.
Carter House
The Egyptian mud-brick house of British archaeologist Howard Carter, where he lived 87 years ago when he discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, has been reopened as a museum.
Aswan
Gate to Africa. Don't miss the spices on the market. Aswan gives you a splendid view on the Nile (ant don't forget Hercule Poirot!).
Dendera
The Temple of Hathor at Dendera is one of the latest Egyptian temples. Dedicated to the wife of the god Horus, it was built in Roman times and its decorations include Roman emperors alongside Egyptian gods. Dendera is a popular day trip from Luxor.
Abydos
One of the holiest sites: a cult center of Osiris and gateway to the underworld, a popular place of pilgrimage and burial. The main monument is the Temple of Seti I, built appr. 1300 BC by Seti and his son Ramses II. Its fine reliefs are considered among the best of the New Kingdom.
